Westlake Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica

About Us

La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) at Westlake in Eanes ISD is an honor society for dedicated high school students enrolled in classes focused on the Spanish language and culture. SHH, originally named the Spanish National Honor Society, was founded in 1953. Its purpose is to “recognize high school achievement in Spanish and Portuguese and to promote interest in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian studies” (AATSP). Since Westlake does not offer Portuguese as a second language, SHH primarily centers around advancement of the study of the Spanish language and empowerment of Spanish-speaking communities.

Members of SHH demonstrate an interest in learning more about the Spanish language and Spanish speaking cultures, integrity, and a commitment to improving their communities. To reinforce these values, SHH requires all current members of the club to complete 15 hours of community service each year to remain a member of the club, at least ten of which must be provided by SHH or related to Spanish in some way.

Joining SHH is by application only, and applications are available now! Applicants must be in Spanish 3 or above during the 2022-23 school year and be in satisfactory academic standing. Fill out this google form to begin the application process.

Gift Baskets for Custodians!

1/2/2022

SHH officers and teacher sponsor with holiday baskets

In the last weeks of the fall semester, SHH worked on a festive service project: holiday gift baskets for the custodial staff. Even in a normal year, our custodial staff work around the clock to keep the school clean. Since we are in a global pandemic, their work is of utmost importance to the safety of students and staff. These gift baskets were a token of our appreciation for their work in keeping our school a safe and clean environment during such a difficult time.

To make these gift baskets, SHH had members contribute items such as teas, lotions, mugs, socks, and chocolate. Early before school one morning, members assembled all of the items into eighteen baskets, one for each member of the custodial staff.

SHH looks forward to continuing this tradition in future years. We hope that these baskets spread joy and cheer this holiday season!

Pulsera Project Success!

WHS seniors showing off their colorful pulseras

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th - October 15th), SHH participated in the Pulsera Project, a two week sale of colorful bracelets (pulseras) and bags (bolsitas) made by artisans in Guatemala and Nicaragua. The Pulsera Project, in turn, provides these artisans a fair trade job that pays a livable wage. This is especially impactful since many of these artisans live in areas with high unemployment and unsafe working conditions.

To support this cause, each day, before school and at lunch, a pair of SHH members would take a shift at a booth stationed either in the commons or Chap Court and sell pulseras and bolsitas to other students. The team at the booth would manage all aspects of the sale for that time: the earnings, inventory, display, and customer interactions. Some teams had exceptional skill at selling the pulseras and bolsitas, with one pair selling sixteen in one shift!

Through this project, SHH sold over 200 pulseras and bolsitas, raising over 2,000 dollars for the Pulsera Project. We are grateful to all those who bought and sold pulseras to help us achieve such a successful sale!
